Take a passage of music and have the entire wind section play it on a low register note like Concert Bb. Make the dynamic FF only. So they will have to breathe much more often and use a huge volume of air to do it. I call this the Low One Note version. If you use Concert F a lot, make the brass players play a passage all on low concert F, horns/mellos on their low G.
Also, do you talk about how to describe good sounds? Then direct the student's listening to recognize when it's "thin," "weak," etc. Get them to recognize when it's clear, resonant, vibrant, full, supported. etc.
