I stand in the hallways and watch as administrators stand there and visit with each other. We have procedures laid out for us at the beginning of the year, and then there's no follow through.
Examples: kids are not supposed to use the restroom during passing periods. Administrators stand outside the restrooms, and kids go in anyway.
Kids are not supposed to run in the hallway. They do anyway. They are told that they will return to an elementary type of line up by classes and transition to your next period. It's October and hasn't happened yet.
I stand outside my room as I am expected, but I'm not about to fight a battle that cannot be won. If a band kid is doing something wrong out there, I can address that student as I have a relationship built there. Nothing else is really worth my time.
At my time here at this school, I've been docked on an observation for "not using technology". Metronome and Tonal Energy didn't count. Had to be a laptop or projected on a screen. Had I made a one slide powerpoint with an announcement, that would have sufficed. Go figure.
Also have been told that I need to have some social media presence. One teacher created a facebook page that was touted to me as a phenomenal example of what I needed to be doing. It had about 20 likes. Fewer than that if you removed school employees who liked it out of support for the teacher who created it.
I really enjoy the colleagues I work with, and I love teaching the students I have. That makes the other stuff tolerable. I have given up on this group of administrators understanding what I do and knowing what a good band program should look like. I just hang out in my own world, and do the best I can for the kids I have.
