Resigning instead of accepting a transfer

The school I teach at is under enrolled and our head choir director has just been told they are being transferred to another school across town. We are a very successful magnet school and the other is... not. I personally took a 4,000 pay cut when I came here because I love the program.
If I were in the choir director's shoes I would resign immediately and go to a nearby suburb with an opening (and a better stipend). Before I suggest this to the CD is this even possible? Will they hold their certificate for leaving their contract, or will likely let them go without an issue?
