High School band should not be a part time job. Many of your students chose not to participate in college ensembles (non-music majors) because you (collective you, not you personally) burn them out in high school. I work at a major university that recruits students over the summer at their orientation. That's one of our main selling points on joining an ensemble in college. "You know those hours and hours and hours you spend for band in high school with extra practices, sectionals, and all that stuff???? Yeah.... we don't do that here. Your ensemble is a class, and that's it. Then you go be "whatever your major is" the rest of the time." The relief on their face when they realize their time commitment is reasonable tells the story.
This is just my opinion. I wish you the best in deciding what is best for your students. Thank you for what you do. It doesn't get said enough.
