Re: TMEA Attendance Limit- Hill worth dying on?
Only if you have students in the All State band. We want to think that TMEA is all important and it is a wonderful conference but at the same time, districts are already short-handed for subs, (not just because of Covid). So if you have 4 or 5 or 10 teachers all leaving for the same 3 days that is a problem for the district different than just claiming they don't like the arts. Our classes, (performing bands and choirs) are also usually larger so getting another teacher to "cover" during their conference or splitting up those kids if subs are a no show becomes very difficult as well.
We think nothing of 50 kids in a classroom or more but a math teacher getting 10 additional kids to just sit becomes unmanageable.
If you feel the district does not support the arts, then it is in your best interest to begin looking for a better fit if you feel that way. TMEA is not a hill worth dying over.
And as someone else said, show them the rule book on who must attend with All-State students and then fight dirty by letting the parents argue they want their child's teacher there to watch over them and not just some district employee they don't know, (assuming they send the choir as the sole representative).
