Finished my first drill two weeks ago then we shut down for a week due to student/teacher absences. Came back and had a rehearsal to lock in first movement last week. From this I changed our drill in second and third movement to be much simplier.
Second movement is 3-4 moves while the third movement has 8 moves. We learned all but one set of the second movement during class yesterday and should finish it today. Tonight we're cleaning the first two movements. Next week we start putting third movement on.
My biggest fear/issue is memorization. The kids are just not doing it. I'm having to pound out the music during class and get up in their face to listen to those struggling to find who to focus on mostly with music. We were suppose to have the second movement memorized the week we closed but that didn't happen. This week 2/3 of the students have it memorized. We still have another piece to get under memory after that.
Less than three weeks before our first festival. I'm worried but all I can do is work it during class and during night rehearsals. I need to stay on them and keep them accountable.
What is the end goal?
Why are we doing this?
Set their eyes on a goal and show them the path to get there.
