You're obviously a great teacher. Why not look into a less competitive small school program? So many of these programs deal with constant teacher turnover for people looking for the next "big job" and these programs get (almost exclusively) young head directors. I'm an older director that teaches small school and most days I leave the school at 4:30 or earlier and get paid over 70k on 18 years of experience. The kids work hard for me. I (recently) attempted to ascend into the ranks of "bigtime" marching programs and I was appalled by the lack of decency shown to directors at the higher levels. It's cut throat for a job that is 100% less pay than most professionals who work less hours and deal with less issues. The amount of time wasted by big programs is probably causing a lot of the burnout too. It's amazing how the big school world has gotten this obsession with trying to make mini hs drum corps. We've done this to ourselves. A lot of the big time guys are having trouble making it past 15 years right now. Has band directing turned into a "temporary career?" We're running out of band directors like crazy right now. I hope that you pursue something that makes you happier. If you like marching band I challenge you to give small schools a look if you're not already at one. And, if you are and you're having this kind of schedule you need to reconsider how you're doing things there and simplify everything. Best of luck to you and I hope you find the balance you're looking for.
