If we are asked to have our students read material about our subject matter to aid growth in literacy after a massive gap in learning, the onus is on us to select that material. I hope that we all aspire to help our students read and write in English better, and it doesn't even need to take time away from our precious, universally-recognized top ensemble. Simply find an article on NoRedInk or Newsela (your school and students probably already have access to one or both of these) on art and culture in the news. It won't be about your UIL pieces this year, but it will be in an adjacent area of study and you can use it as a way to promote fine arts outside of the band hall.
Ask your English department head for help. Stop fighting campus efforts to better our students. Guide your musicians to experience art in all subject areas by promoting literacy through arts-related material. It's just band, why are we still like this?!
