Have a clipboard on your stand
On the clipboard are rosters of each class
My students got 20 pts a day (100 pts a week)
for class participation. Prorated on short weeks.
When the class got talkative I grabbed the
By each student talking I put a minus by their name. That was 2 points deducted from their daily participation grade. Rationale: if you are talking you are not listening.
Also they can get a plus by their name adding two points to that grade for proper participation, Playing a line correctly, just something positive.
If they receive more than one check in a day or more than 3 in one week, I contacted the parent and explained that listening in class was part of participating and that if you are talking, you are not listening.
It took a little bit but when those students saw me grab that clipboard , they got very quiet and even went "shhhh" to quiet others down. You will have defiant ones ,just follow your districts plan as far as referring them to the office etc.
A friend of mine introduced me to this and yes it works. Do what you have to do so you can have a quiet learning environment.
