I am a director in a SMC 2A program. We have around 100 or more kids in the band. We still have kids that want to quit. I never recruit kids anymore. I tell the students “if you want your group to be larger, go talk to kids.” Because of this we grew by about 40 kids. Now, the only thing I’ll do when they want to quit is I’ll have them weigh what they’re doing and what they’ll miss out on. I’ll only do this on kids that I think will be incredible band kids. I try to never put a kid in a corner or “force” them to be in band. Kids have quit band forever. It’s not unusual. One thing you can do to help is to let them administrators know of the financial costs involved with rewriting drill. I did that with mine and found out that they’re advertising to kids that all electives are full and therefore there is nowhere to move them. Lol. 😀 Good luck. The kids that have stuck with it need you. Hope you stuck around.
