Something to keep in mind - there is a huge difference between the membership requirements of a middle school and high school band member. In middle school, most of everything is confined to the class period they are assigned with occasional sectionals, a trip here and there, etc. In high school, all of a sudden they are giving up almost a month of their summer vacation to show up to marching band practice and from there on it is a huge time commitment. Not to mention the huge toll it takes on parents.
I think we have to also realize that there are just some students that don't want to be out in the sun doing physical activity - with an instrument or not. Personally, I was an All-State musician that couldn't have cared less about marching band. In most schools, had I not wanted to play in the marching band I would not have been eligible to be in the band. Not everyone loves marching band as much as the typical high school marching director does.
Just some things to consider. I welcome the discourse.
