I sent home an "important dates" that included band camp dates in January. Sent home a band camp calendar in May when students were still in school. E-mailed parents the calendar as well. I even spoke about the first day of camp at the spring concert.
Sent home reminder texts and e-mails as well, and even mailed home a letter two weeks before registration.
Our camp was this and next week. Two weeks of camp, which is what my district has done since I've been here and even when I was here as a student.
We start school August 12th. I'd love to not touch July when it comes to marching but I cannot learn and clean all fundamentals and music in a week (we're military, so we have a different set of fundamentals compared to Corps band). We need two weeks to get music and marching learned.
If we didn't start school until August 23rd, like we used to do early in my career, then I could stay out of July. But alas, that's outside my control.
I just feel like I'm getting frustrated about good kids who don't show up.
I have to keep going back to something that my pastor said back in January: "If you put your success in the number of people who show up you'll always be disappointed." I have to keep that mentality. But it's still disappointing thinking you're going to get to 120 kids this year after a small year to only have 90 kids show up the first week.
