Volleyball, track, baseball, softball, swimming, golf, diving, and gymnastics also are in the mix and will be traveling a long ways. Those teams don't generate nearly the money the big 2 sports do but will eat into profits of the big 2 in a hurry when traveling those distances. Currently, every event for the Pac 12, Big 12, and SEC don't require planes. Send Baylor to the Pac 12 and every event requires a plane ride for every away event. And while football can charter a plane all of those other events are flying commercial flights. Hard to justify chartering a plane for the 8 people headed to a golf tournament.
The days of college sports being justified are quickly fading which is sad and I"m a HUGE college sports fan. College football and Men's basketball may have just killed college sports as a whole. An awful lot of those smaller sport kids were just happy to have a scholarship while they earned a degree. Yes, there needed to be some tweaks to the earning money while on scholarship thing but this new "pay to play" money grabbers for football and basketball just ruined it for all those other sports. And I was offered, (didn't accept because the school didn't offer a music degree), a chance to be a college athlete and it would have been a huge honor to play but now it's just turning into a cluster and I can imagine how I would have felt as that "second tier" athlete.
