It is my experience that most if not all issues that arise later can be solved by starting beginner clarinets the correct way. A lot of teachers do not spend enough time with the mouthpiece and barrel forming the correct embouchure, voicing, tongue position and breath control. There is a plethora (I like that word) of information available so there should be no excuse in starting out beginners the correct way. I saw where John Benzer is presenting a clarinet clinic at TBA. It should be pretty informative. It is never too late even for high school students to change or adjust their playing style, It may just take time but it would be worth it.
