I do get that we think it is good for the kids if we do that. But when is enough, enough?
Maybe I missed a course in college or a line in my contract that says band is 24/7 lifestyle.
I love band and I love being a band director. But I also love my free time away from the job.
Too many schools see it as the norm for band directors to work all of these non-contract hours and say it is covered by the stipend they provide. Most times that stipend will come out pennies on the dollar for all the extra time.
Working all of these extra hours for little or no money has become the norm instead of the exception.
Until it stops, schools will just continue to expect it and give no compensation for it.
Why do we do it? Why do we give up having a life so we can sell our soul to the school we work for?
