I would recommend a comprehensive audiology exam by a reputable audiologist. They will advise you to the degree of hearing loss, the range it's in and will customize your hearing aids specifically for that loss.
Yes, they're expensive - but, quality of life and not enraging your spouse because you don't understand her/him is cheaper than a divorce. DO NOT be tempted to cheap-out; check with your insurance, many policies will pay for up to $1,000 per ear every 3 years.
Mine are PHONAC but there are other equally reputable brands. They are discreet and virtually no one will know you have them if you don't reveal it. I also suggest the open-ear type rather than the ones that completely plug your ear.
