Re: Word of advice to HS directors mad about numbers
At one of my previous schools, I had 15 flutes ready to move up to high school. Only 2 made it to the high school band the next year. 1 moved out of town, 1 quit for a different program, and 11 went to an early college high school where they were not able to participate in fine arts. It is the MS director's job to recruit for the MS band program. It is not their job to eliminate that pressure off of you. When I took over my current program, there were quite a few kids who left the program because they saw "the new guy" coming in as an opportunity to get out and try other things. If you don't build a relationship with those kids, you are nothing more than "the new guy" who won't miss the kids because you don't know who they are.
Why not take every opportunity to get to know the kids? Who would you rather spend time with? Someone who wants to get to know you, or someone who wants someone else to do that work?
