The Beginning Band though continues to be behind... I haven't listened to it yet but my assistant said it was rough.
Here's my advice - you're talking 6th Graders. Parents will be happy just to even see them dressed up and performing. Play into that. Something is really rough? Play into that - have them play that rough section and say, "See they're learning, and this is the process," before playing if you need to. I always tell my 6th graders it's the last year they're cute and innocent and parents love them for just about anything. You can weather a bad performance here. Someone mentioned not using the problem kids - it's a good option if you have the numbers. Seeing the 1A though, I highly doubt you have that option.
One other idea you might be able to use to pull it off is bring some high school kids in to be ringers. If the kids get a better experience it'll all be worth it in the end!
