Re: Kids Quitting- extremely discouraged
It's really hard on all of us right now but especially schools that weren't allowed to have live rehearsals for a long time. We are having a Spring Concert tomorrow and it will be our only other concert band performance other than UIL this year. Performances are what makes the activity worthwhile. I've had numerous students change their mind and return to band after a great performance at the end of the year. I wouldn't take anything about student retention really personal right now. If you're frustrated with your situation it might be time in your career for a reset at a new school. Otherwise, stick it out and keep doing all the things you say you are. Retention kind of always works in cycles anyways. My band program is currently super popular. We're growing by over 30 students in our high school band next year in a 2A school. But, I guarantee there will come a time where less people will be excited about our band and those numbers won't be as high. It has more to do with 90% other factors than you.
