Re: Kids Quitting- extremely discouraged
Yep. Experiencing the exact same thing. Inexplicably. Our program over the last several years grew and grew from 30 to nearly 130 by 2019. We'd begun making consistent 1s, took out-of-state trips every two years, got bigtime media coverage and recognition, we played pops concerts with local celebrity musicians, jazz band was killing it. For next fall I've got 59 signed up and kids from grades 9-12 are dropping with no real reason. Suddenly the vibe is kind of apathetic, what used to cause excitement no longer does--kids are kind of like "been there, done that".
Meanwhile, a lot of the same kids who dropped are emigrating over to choir/show choir! Kids who remain in band tell me it is because the choir kids don't have to do anything. They're on their phones, watching movies, doing nothing, etc.
I believe this was coming with or without Covid, honestly, but Covid certainly was a catalyst that really exacerbated it happening.
