Re: Sightreading Explanation
At the beginning I have students point to and look at the key signature as I tell them what it is. I say who plays and who has rests and start fingering along from the beginning. Students pop their keys to help heed the rhythm and tune. If thereís something important I need to talk about weíll stop. If not I call out accidentals and fingerings like trumpet F#, trombone Eb. Notes that I know MY students might miss or confuse the fingering. If thereís an accidental Iíll also tell the students to show the fingering to their neighbor. Iíll call out special or unusual things in percussion, call and response in the winds, if thereís entrances in off beats. I look at the students when theyíre going to have an entrance to reassure them. For dynamics that are piano I tell them not too soft and I mirror the dynamics in conducting size. I basically talk the entire time because I donít want to leave any questions in the students mind. I have been complimented on my explanations before. If you would like me to watch and comment on a video of yourself doing a SR explanation I would be glad to.
