Re: Small School Band Help
I have to admit I jumped from job to "better" job many times in my early career. Most young directors will do the same unless they are fortunate enough to land an assistant job with a good experienced mentor. Those small school "starter" jobs where you are the only music teacher can be good learning situations but are seldom desirable for the long haul. Any situation can be improved with determination and time, but you must be realistic with your expectations. It took me 6 years to turn around my first decent job but I was so burnt out from the sheer effort I moved on to another school with higher expectations. In my last school where I taught 18 years before retiring I faced all the same trials as any other job, except one. There were high expectations from the kids and community. That made all the difference! It took years to get the support of administration, but once on board, the job became a joy. Choose wisely and hang in there!
