I left teaching and am now a road guy. And I can say having spent my career around those competitive programs or wannabe competitive programs life in the 234A world looks like it's a lot more fun. Not to say they aren't competitive and good with talented, driven musicians and what not but the drive of the 56 folks to outspend and outdo each other pushed me from teaching. And the smaller communities seem to be having a lot more fun. Different problems but a 100k marching show isn't one of them! And I haven't seen a single one of those small schools start marching band yet either unlike nearly every 56 school I know of.
Different energy and different philosophies. Find what makes you happy but know there are two very different worlds happening out there in this great state and Happy is on to something some of you on the verge of burnout might want to look into.
