Re: At some point…
I left a lucrative band job at in a suburb of a large metropolitan area a few years ago. I now teach at a small rural school and I can say without a doubt that I've never been happier in my entire life. I don't feel like everything has to be a competition. And the success of my band actually gets noticed, unlike being at my old school where the accomplishments of the band were overshadowed by every extracurricular activity imaginable. I don't know if "go find another band job" includes considering a small, rural district, or if other factors in life would even allow you to make a move like that, but I can say that for me and my family this was the best move I could have made. Small school kids need good teaching too. Whatever steps you take moving forward, I hope that you are able to find a working environment that allows you to thrive. I wish more people understood that winning isn't everything and also, winning looks different from band program to band program.
