Re: At some point…
Back in the day I was on campus from 6:45 to 6 if there was nothing else happening. That was a normal day, (school started at 7, after school started at 3 and ended at 5:30) because we had to be there before 1st period and then normal after school stuff, (marching rehearsals, winter activities, open band hall, Jazz, faculty meeting etc.). By the time the day was done I was spending 4 days a week on campus for 11.5 hours a day. Throw in a game and a contest and my work week went to 72 just like that for 10 or 11 weeks in a row. Add in a booster meeting or other random stuff and even on a non-contest/bye week it was 55 hours or more plus 45 minutes of driving on either side of it. And remember high school has 10 football games PLUS multiple weeks of region so every weekend from September through December had something!
And we weren't competitive. We were just teaching and keeping the doors open for the kids. HS is a young person's game anymore and if we aren't careful will become a beast that we can't control. Sometimes we do it to ourselves and sometimes it's the nature of the beast but if we can use our staff efficiently, other than football season we can find ways to have a few people after school and a director going home early. But those buildings with 2 or less directors that's tough!
