I teach at a rapidly growing 3A, however our band numbers are dropping. I feel that I am doing the most to keep students engaged while making the course fun, but we are losing students left and right. Several students (top players, popular ones that others will follow out) are leaving and told me it is because they are being bullied by our school for being in band. I believe this because our student section loudly chanted "Get off the field" at football games during performances this past year... The student section's opinion of band has spread through the school. I had to cancel our original band banquet plans due to record low attendance, social events are not attended by many outside of the core group of band students, and the morale of the band is quickly souring because they are always getting bullied.
Any help and/or ideas to aide in retention would be greatly appreciated. If you have suggestions on how to change the perspective of our growing community as well please share. I am running out of ideas and need help.
