It's a rating during Covid. You did something probably half the state didn't do which was even attend UIL. I know districts and regions where the first contest for their middle school students will be Marching contest next year as Freshmen because they haven't been to UIL in two years.
I spent years getting mediocre ratings partly because I was learning how to teach but partly because no matter how good of a director I was when you take 15 or 20 kids out of your middle school ensemble the week before UIL because of grades NOBODY is going to wow the judges. I learned early how to understand the ratings and comments and in my case, they didn't hear my actual band. Maybe you had false hopes. Maybe it was a bad day. Regardless, it was one day in a big, tough, long, chaotic year and you put kids on stage. In my book, that is the biggest victory out there so pick yourself up, put a smile on your face, put some new music in front of your kids and enjoy the day.
