Also, I feel the students need to be put into this slight pressure situation to prepare them for other pressure situations they'll face in the future.
So many of them are nervous/afraid of the in-person audition, but they do it and come out of it and are a little less afraid for next time. This is how being a human works.
Auditions are not for everyone--I get that. Let's not abolish them for that minority of kids who are just too afraid to do it. Always gives me pause when a kid who is, say, on the volleyball team can be out on a court in a packed gym of people cheering/booing with this high-pressure competitive event where you win or lose, yet they are petrified to go into a room with one judge and a piano player to perform one song.
I really believe the in-person audition is important for more reasons than trying out for a band.
