Part of the learning and growth experience is hearing the other students in the room, especially the ones that are better than you. Probably the biggest jump in my playing was after the first year I auditioned for region in HS. I was good, but for really the first time was compelled to sit there and listen to several players that were significantly better than me. I think this has an even greater impact at the Region level than at Area. To eliminate that would eliminate part of the reason we do the auditions to begin with.
While messier, more inconvenient, at times more irritating, doing it live also almost completely eliminates the opportunity for dishonesty. Levels the playing field when it comes to the actual performance. One kid playing live for a panel of live judges. No differences in audio equipment, no chance it is some other kid (or teacher) playing, no cut and paste recording.
