Re: UIL Grade 1 with 2 bad trumpets
I figured it was something like this. Unlike a few other posters, I assumed that you already tried many other solutions. Too many people like to throw out the "just teach," talking point which is dismissive and takes little to no critical thought. My thoughts would be to scroll through the grade 1 list and find something with singleton parts. From there, try to narrow it down to pieces that heavily double the trumpet parts with clarinet and or flute. Next, start rewriting parts to fill in for missing trumpet parts. You basically need to try and "hide" the trumpets as much as you can. I've been there. Sakura, Elizabethan Dance, Dorian Chant, Night Fury are a good place to start. As far as switching students to trumpet, if you have some flute players with good attitudes to spare, they will actually make good candidates to switch.
