I approached sight reading pretty close to how I would in a normal year. The difference this year was that I paid closer attention this year to how the kid were acting before they actually played the piece, I let that play a bigger factor into what rating I gave the ensemble. Some people have the idea that the rating should be based on just the performance but this year I factored the kids' effort during the prep time more then the performance. However the better the kids acted before always changed how they played the piece.
Cases like middle schools I had to remember that some of these kids are super super young and have very little experience even with preparing music months ahead.
In the end, Its not about the rating ever. The bands that even showed up to a contest I was judging got an automatic air hive-five once they were done because them finding a way to prepare music this year is incredible and when I was teaching I do not even know if I could have done what these teachers are doing now.
