First off, I stop my ratings at a 3rd division because giving a 4 or 5 this year is just unnecessary when a 3rd division gets the point across. Luckily I have only had to give one 3rd division this year.
I AM more lenient on the problems that the social distance has caused ensemble like precision and across-the-band section balance. I judged things like section playing, color group balance, articulation, dynamics etc as I would in any normal year.
I had a band play Blue Ridge Reel by Balmages at one of the contests I judged and if anyone knows that piece, the melody is passed around the band throughout and in this case, each time a new instrument was the spotlight the entrance was no where near precise but they still had good tone and played the passage well. They had similar problems like this in their march. I still gave them a 1st Divison.
Overall I am giving more 1st divisions than normal, but honestly I think that has more to do with the easier requirements then what I am doing, though I know I still am being more nice this year than normal years.
