Have the kid rent a used alto from a reputable music store that has its own shop in-store. Have them get the insurance. Insurance should cover replacement as well as repair. Repair will not be cosmetic but keep the instrument in playing condition. At the end of marching season, they can return the instrument and walk away from the contract. That's how my music store does it.
Also, you as the band director can request the particular mouthpiece you want with the rental and that will be included in the rental agreement at no extra charge. So if you want, the kid can get a used (cleaned and sanitized) AL3 or C* with his used saxophone.
