I disagree. I taught 5th grade beginners for close to 20 years. It also depends on what kind of elementary music teaching they received. For example, I had flute players and sax players read their way through EE Book 1 because their reading skills on recorders. If you see some incredible small school bands in west Texas, most start as fifth graders.
