There's not a single elective on campus that once kids actually sign up, then I have to test them, place them, get them to buy an instrument and so on and so on. Every other elective just goes on like a normal day. I'm also crushed by the number of emails and meetings by our FAD that we need more numbers and not enough kids are signing up.
Did I mention our school does a Food Drive every week because our parents can't afford to buy their own food but somehow I'm supposed to convince them to rent or buy an instrument......
Then we have to do fundraisers to help with trip costs and offset other costs. But the kids don't participate.
I hate to say this but I feel like some places don't deserve or need band. We force it down their throats because it's what we think they need. Maybe they need more computer courses or more tech courses. Maybe make choir more of a standout.
I'm not saying music should go away but maybe sustaining band in some areas is really not reasonable and adds a lot of unnecessary stress to a lot of people.
