Re: Only Tuba Player Wants Out
I had my only tuba player break an ankle once. He was a bad marcher anyway, do I put him on the sideline and he played from there. I also didn't have a pit. Made a 1 at marching contest. As far as too small to switch anyone, if you have at least two flutes and can talk one into switching to tuba, it will give you a second tuba player and more bottom. Flute players make good choices for this because they are used to using a lot of air and the muscles of their face aren't as locked in as they are for other brass instruments or clarinet. A small band with limited and unbalanced instrumentation can work well but you have to choose your music wisely and have a really smart drill. Also, there has to be a higher degree of buy in for the band from the members. Every kid has to know the music, period.
