The only time I've been hired without having an inside person recommend me I cold called the principal. It was the last week of July, so I knew they'd need someone quickly. I called on Friday, interviewed on Monday and was hired on Tuesday. I don't think I'd take that approach in March, but when you're within a few weeks of the year principals start getting desperate.
