Frankly, it isn't my job to make sure Johnny or Sally pass Mrs. I'm-Only-Here_For-The-Paycheck's Algebra 2 class or Coach Who-Let-Him-In-The-Classroom's Aquatic Science class, and penalizing the band by removing potentially key players (although, really, every kid is important) devalues the hours of work and learning that go into UIL preparation. BUT, I do it because I don't want to see the rest of the students deal with a less than optimal performance situation.
Thank goodness UIL removed this archaic handicap for Concert & Sightreading. Will I still counsel students who struggle in other classes? You bet, but I'm certainly not going to let it affect my band come April.
