Re: Horn tuning for non-horn directors
The way young horn players place their right hand and hold their horns are critical elements to tone, projection, and comfort. I have seen many players go "vertical" with the bell aimed at their body muffling the sound and many players not even using their hand in the bell (or worse yet "rim grabbers). Kids can get into bad habits in their first year. It's much easier to get them started with good positions and reinforce good habits. I have used masking tape with beginners to place their right hand in the ideal position. All these elements need to be addressed on the road to good tone production and good intonation.
