Re: I thought I had heard it all
What's different? Sports are glorified on TV almost non stop. Lebron, Brady, Tiger Woods and the list goes on. Nike commercials with sports stars, pizza commercials with sports stars, etc. How many bands are glorified on national TV? How many band directors? What commercials and products do they endorse on TV? Parents and kids gravitate to this over band because they think they will get a scholarship or make the pros. And let's not talk about administrators and how they lift up athletics and ignore sports. I was fortunately lucky enough to once be in a small school where I developed a great band program and kids and parents were smart enough to see that the band was doing well and sports weren't. More kids were staying in band than athletics and we were "winning" and the teams were losing. Well, we got a new admin. and I was blamed for the team losing and for kids quitting athletics. Principals actually started going to the middle school and recruiting for athletics while doing everything they could to kill the band program. They created schedule conflicts, cut the budget, etc. When all else seemed to fail, they worked hard and successfully ran me off and hired someone to take a check and kill the band off through natural causes. So, that's the reality.
