They're built like tanks. They play consistently. They play fairly well in tune. They're maintainable. They're at a decent price point.
What's not to like about the H179 and H379?
I *LOVE* Yamahas, but they tend to play a bit sharp (many are tuned to A=442), and they're quite a bit less durable than the typical Holton due to their thinner metal. The current Conn 8D tends to sound like playing into a bucket, they're just too big for MS and lower-level HS kids. The 10D is an option, but it doesn't blend if you have 8Ds, by their own admission.
Don't overlook the Jupiter 1150 either. People still sleep on Jupiter but they make some quality equipment at a decent price point.
