First of all I'm not sure of your classification, but I would program the minimum requirements for this year. For example, I have an already small 2A band that has made 1's the last two years. For this year I programmed two grade 1's with no 1st or 2nd parts in any of the three pieces and with a lot of block scoring in general. I've had kids in and out of school due to remote learning/quarantine. And the three pieces still work and sound full. You said you wanted quality preparation, so this is the way to do it. You can focus on getting the best sound, balance, tuning, phrasing, etc. My two cents. I'm sure others will chime in and slap down my suggestion and talk about playing hard music, which is fine if you are sure you'll have your strongest players and sections at contest.
