If you can afford them I would go for the Yamaha clarinets mentioned below. We bought two of those student level basses this year and I like them a lot more than some Leblanc's we bought about six years back. We actually had some massive problems with the Leblancs first with finish, and then with the peg receiver snapping off two seconds after the kid opened the case the first time. (Careful kid!) They made it right for us, but I wouldn't do another one.

I would aim for those Yamahas if possible. They were relatively affordable after we bid them out.
