Re: Region judging almost destroyed my marriage
I definitely agree. When I came into my former band program, I basically had two beginner bands because the 7th graders weren't taught correctly. I set up a system where students worked on region music because it made them better. The students who could get through the music, I sent them to region. When you are trying to build a program, you have to do what's best for your students and your program. Sometimes that means starting from somewhere so students will start striving to get better and want to compete. Sometimes we make those decisions knowing that other directors won't like listening to them or understand. It's not "irresponsible" or "passing the buck." It's making a decision as a director that you know will help your students and your program in the long run. I stayed with my students before and after school working on that music with them and trying to help them and teach them the lessons that they need, but sometimes that has to come from actually experiencing the competition and being judged, etc.
