How many more things are they handling this year than any other year? What I see around is kids have 0 interest because in March school was optional so now in November, it's optional as well. Online kids are not doing any work and the parents have 0 involvement. Teachers are trying to teach both sets of kids and nobody is actually learning anything. I think that is why you are starting to see the smaller, rural districts removing the online option for kids that are failing or not showing up to their online classes.
Be firm and have expectations. The world is not going to accept mediocrity forever. Bridges and buildings and doctors all have set standards whether the designer went to school during the pandemic or not. Unfortunately, I see a lot of the kids losing out on choices later on because of the education they are receiving now. Some of that is their own fault and some of that is the system.
Regardless, I say set your standards and expect them to achieve. Be realistic but set a standard and go.
