The reason that the VAST majority of show bands get 2s or below is because learning to control the sound volume and tone quality is very difficult for young musicians. Look carefully at the UIL rubric before you make this change - you may be sabotaging your ability to succeed. It can be done - there's four bands above that show this, and some consistently excellent teaching going on at all four of those campuses - but kids want to emulate SWAC and MEAC bands, and they aren't mature enough musicians to consistently play with those sounds. They hear cell phone videos of the bands playing in the stands at football games and want to emulate *that* sound, not the slightly-dialed-back version that makes it onto the football field.
If you think you're a strong enough teacher and your community would support it, go for it. I'm all for celebrating diversity in marching. I love a good military band. I love seeing an energetic show band with the theatricality of the drumline and drum major interactions. I love seeing the symphony on the field that is a truly great corps style band. There's room for all of us in this game.
