With how fast homes are appreciating in DFW (and many other parts of the state), you likely don't have to stay in a home 3-5 years to make it worth your time. We built new in 2013, sold in 2015 for a $20k profit (after factoring in interest and PMI paid).
If you have the down-payment and credit to do so, it makes more sense to buy in DFW than rent right now, regardless of how long you stay.
That being said, renting with no debt is better than applying a down payment to a mortgage while retaining other debts.
