Re: How do you teach tonguing to tuba players?
Try adjusting tongue placement closer to the bottom of the front teeth, as in saying the syllable "TOH." Ask them to tongue firmer and/or stronger. They can practice just their air against the palm of their hand and tell them to make it feel very strong and defined on the exhale. If they overdo it, you can easily calm it down. I've had success with tuba players in private lessons and ensembles for years, beginners through high school.
