Re: Private schools
As a substitute teacher for a faith based private school and the colorguard teacher for same, I can tell you that they do not have a level playing field. They are so far behind the eight ball it's a wonder they compete at all. The h.s. band had about 20 kids, the junior high had about the same, the 6th grade band had about 10, and the beginner band had about 15 split between morning and afternoon classes. The band director and the school contracted with me to come at the last period to teach colorguard, a group of 7 girls from 7th thru 12th grade, half of them were in band. On days when the band director was ill, dealing with her own sick child, or at conventions I was there the entire day.
The instrumentation was lacking, lots of parts had to be rewritten, and there was never a single day that the entire band was there in class. As a retired public school teacher this drove me nuts. But I learned to roll with it.
