Cent One - Why? Why "fix" something that does not appear to be broken? There were 19 1A Bands at UIL State Marching Contest in 2019 - by far the fewest of any classification. We take up the least amount of space, travel in the fewest buses - why the movement to reduce the number of bands going? This was an incredible experience for each of those 19 bands and undoubtedly the highlight of the year for each of these young musicians - possibly the highlight of their entire "career".
Cent Two - not "zoning" contests is going to create an increase in travel for many bands, especially those of us in the Wide Open Spaces of the West Texas Regions - 1, 6, 16 - where, (as mentioned by Britt)a large number of the competing 1A Bands came from. You could end up possibly denying a trip to the State Contest to a deserving, possibly finalist, band from one of these Regions due to the overall strength and numbers of the 1A groups from this area. (3 of the State Finalists were from the same region in 2019).
I'm certainly not going to get into an argument over which is "harder" - teaching in 1A or 6A (or anything in between) but the challenges we face are certainly different from those of the big schools. If you feel that "It's not fair! If I was 1A 'all' we would have to do is get a One to get to State", then by all means, come join us in the Super Small School world! There were several programs I know of that were struggling to find directors over the summer.
Trey - thank you SO MUCH for posting this - I know we'd discussed it but it was off my rader. I will be contacting the Legislative Board with my views.
And to EVERYONE out there - I wish you peace, luck, and SANITY during this crazy time. Let's all help each other. Best Wishes.
